Matrid * The sun was at her back as the burly female picked her way across the meadow, moving at a slow trot. Despite the fact that it was nearing the afternoon, she had awoken not long ago. Lately, Matrid found that there was very little to do, with the exception of helping to keep an eye on the newest little additions to the pack, of course. There was currently no need for her, however, and she had grown tired of napping on and off throughout the morning. The idea of wandering about hadn't exactly appealed to her, but there was nothing else she could think to be doing, so she figured stretching her stiff legs would work.
Well, there was something else she'd rather be doing, which was spending time with her mate. But circumstances were difficult, and she couldn't exactly walk up to Kyren and ask him out for an afternoon stroll. They were still a secret, one that Matrid wasn't going to reveal, in case the Alphas grew terribly angry and punished Kyren. She didn't exactly feel like doing anything that would risk uprooting Kyren's recent position as Beta. And that was another reason they would raise a few red flags. Kyren was in a position of power. And she? Well, she was just a lowly Sklavin.
Not lowly, she scolded herself mentally, trying to force the habit of putting herself down away. She remembered the time she and Kyren had first spent alone, when he had told her to keep her head up and to be proud of herself. He had made her realize that she didn't have to slink around, mentally berating herself all the time. She had come to realize that it wasn't wrong to have a little faith in herself, despite her Sklavin title. While she was no where near close to rebelling against Kasimira or anything insane like that, she wasn't a cowering, trembling creature anymore.
Suddenly Matrid found herself at the stream near the borders of Irrsin, and she realized that she had wandered further than she had intended. She had no intentions of leaving as Zy once had, so with a soft sigh, she lowered herself onto her haunches and then eventually slid into a laying position, her nose inches away from the water. Her ears swivelled back and forth, her eyes slowly drifting closed as she allowed herself to relax. Perhaps she should have been worried, being so far away from the safety of the den and the others, but the Sklavin simply couldn't bring herself to care.

I used up all of my tricks
Kyren had just finished verifying there were no intruders along the border where the earlier howl had come from. With no apparent enemies to threaten or fight he imagined it was turning into quite a beautiful morning. His mind wandered ahead to the coming up weeks and reminding himself to be thoughtful of every action he took around the two influential pups. Of course, their amusing personalities, such as marzel’s ready to threaten one who doesn’t offer enough respect, would not be so amusing when he got older. With patience and careful attention it shouldn’t be a problem, at least for Kyren.
I hope that you like this, but you probably won't
Noticing a familiar and welcome scent he turned from his present location and followed the borderline and down to the stream where he saw the one creature on the planet who had managed to tug at Kyren’s heart strings, and he hadn’t even been all that sure he had a heart. Slowing his walk, taking in the picture presented him he approached her slowly. It was hard to find private time with her. They had to leave at different points, find a secret meeting place, and keep an eye out for any who might stumble upon them. Kyren had planned at one point to tell Kasmira about his feelings for Matrid, and then Eperna had suggested he speak to Tortuga first, so he had tried to bring up the subject to him, however with the birth of the pups Kyren had never gotten a chance to speak with either of the alpha’s. Once again he reminded himself to strive to find a moment alone with Tortuga.
you think you're cooler than me
“Matrid.” The voice was certainly not a whisper, but it was a notch lower than his normal voice. He continued his walk towards her. “Sleeping, so close to the border in the middle of the day?” No opinion of her resting was evident in her tone, just a simple question. “I have to admit, it is a nice spot however to meet up, less likelihood of anyone bothering some time alone.” A soft sigh, “hopefully at somepoint I’ll find time with Tortuga so that we don’t need privacy to hide our emotions.”

Matrid * “Matrid.”
Immediately her eyes snapped open, her head lifting as the familiar voice caused a fluttery feeling in the pit of Matrid's stomach. She turned her head, relieved to see that it was, in fact, Kyren and not another member of the pack. But of course it was him. She would know his voice anywhere. With a small smile, she got to her feet, stretching for a moment before looking back to her mate. She took a second to observe him before he spoke again, dragging her out of her thoughts.
“Sleeping, so close to the border in the middle of the day?”
She smiled sheepishly and shrugged, glancing back at the stream. "There was really nothing else to do, so I sort of wandered off. I originally meant to just rest here but...I suppose I dozed off."
“I have to admit, it is a nice spot however to meet up, less likelihood of anyone bothering some time alone. Hopefully at somepoint I’ll find time with Tortuga so that we don’t need privacy to hide our emotions.”
His words caused her stomach to repeat the weird, fluttery feeling, but this time due to nerves. She could only wonder how Tortuga would take the news that Matrid and Kyren had not only fallen for each other, but had also become mates without either of the Alphas consent. She still didn't know very much about the ivory brute, certainly not enough about him to judge how he would react. She hoped that anger was the last thing that would be experienced, and that instead, he would show understanding.
"I hope that he isn't too angry, or disappointed," she murmured, shuffling restlessly as she glanced back in the general direction of the dens. She was quiet for a long moment before she turned back towards him, her smile widening as she stepped forward, gently nuzzling her face against Kyren's neck. It was an odd thing, affection. Matrid hadn't shown that she loved or cared for anyone in a long, long time. But it didn't feel awkward or forced. Instead, it felt almost...right. She quickly sent a thank you to the Gods for bringing her and Kyren together before she stepped back, glancing up at him.
"I was just thinking about you before you showed up. How have you been?"
All day it seemed, Kyren was on her mind, especially when they were not speaking or near each other. She was always wondering how he was, and if he was okay. More than that, she was keeping a close eye on the pack, watching for things Kyren might need to be aware of. There wasn't very much that Matrid could do for Kyren, and not very much that she could do to aid or protect him - not that he actually needed her protection or anything. She was doing anything and everything she could to assist him, even if it was only by being an extra set of eyes and ears. So far, however, she had seen nor heard nothing worth reporting. Instead she kept her affectionate gaze on him, waiting patiently for anything he might have to tell her.

I used up all of my tricks
Kyren’s tail swayed slowly back and forth watching her as she stood up. She was beautiful to watch. Some inner part of his brain laughed at himself. She was beautiful? He hadn’t thought that when he’d first met her. No, truth was that beauty itself didn’t mean all that much to him. It was her mind, her personality that made him desire her. Once you find you care for someone apparently it makes you love everything about them, not just what first attracted you. At least, that’s what Kyren had to assume.
"I hope that he isn't too angry, or disappointed
I hope that you like this, but you probably won't
“I believe it will be alright, though obviously won’t know for sure until I speak with him. Eperna herself told me to speak to him about us. That isn’t even what I…spoke of…when I made my request to her. She was just kind enough to tell me what I desired the most to know. I only hope to much time hasn’t passed to change that, but those pups came at just the most inopportune moment.” A shake of his head, “either way, the pups are getting older…” pausing for a split second as he smirked at remembering the pups antics of the day, “rather quickly...so it should be easier to find a moment.”
Kyren tilted his head, running his muzzle in her pelt as she nuzzled him. His eyes slid half shut, breathing in her scent and exhaling a bit of the tension he’d built up. Funny how he never noticed his tension until he was with her.
you think you're cooler than me
"I was just thinking about you before you showed up. How have you been?"
“Busy.” It was the first answer that automatically came to him. A sklavins life might be boring currently but Kyren couldn’t imagine ever allowing his life to be boring. Even if he found himself in a place where he couldn’t move much, his mind never wanted to stop working. “I still would live to sink my fangs into Zy’s neck. I walk our borders every morning, get to know them as well as possible.” Another slight pause and a grin as he added, “the pups are roaming without permission now. Little Marzell thinks himself quite intimidating. Little pup was about to tell me I had no rights to tell him what to do. Fortunatly I was lucky and managed to impress him, at least it seemed that way. Do your best to make sure those pups think well of you know, for its how they are likely to see you when their older.” Another pause, and he shook his head. “I’m imagining you already know that much.” Stepping back in he slid his muzzle up and over her head, and another deep sigh. “I’m glad that of all the sklavins Kasmira bought, she actually found one as wonderful as you.”

Matrid * “Matrid.”
When Kyren replied that he had been busy, Matrid was not surprised. She imagined that he had a lot on his plate, what with patrolling the borders, helping watch the pups, and Zy. It seemed the moment that she thought his name, Kyren was speaking about him, making her blink several times quickly.
“I still would live to sink my fangs into Zy’s neck. I walk our borders every morning, get to know them as well as possible.”
She chuckled, nodding to show that she understood. She knew how agitated Kyren was by Zy's very presense, and she assumed that the feeling was mutual. She remembered perectly how they had snarled and argued when they'd first met, how the tension between them had been obvious in the den the night that the pups were born. Despite the fact that Kyren was Beta, Matrid was constantly worrying that the two would come to blows and end up hurting one another. While she couldn't say that she was very close to Zy, she would rather not see him hurt, although she wouldn't openly admit it. Honestly, she would have rathered not see any of the pack members hurting.
Do your best to make sure those pups think well of you know, for its how they are likely to see you when their older...I’m imagining you already know that much.”
She laughed and nodded as he moved forward, sliding his head over hers. Pressing her head against his shoulder, she stayed close to him, simply enjoying how calm he made her feel. "I'll admit, I've grown a bit attached to them. I'm enjoying watching them grow up." Her voice softened as she spoke of the pups, for she truly did find herself happy when she was around them. Their spunky personalities and their boundless energy cheered her up, and made her long for pups of her own one day. "I've found that I love pups. They're just so...unique. Special."
Then, feeling almost embarrassed, she silenced herself until Kyren's soft, caring words made her grin, her eyes fluttering closed as she leaned against him. She felt light and airy, as if nothing could burst her little bubble of happiness. She could have stood there with him for days if circumstances would have allowed it. But she knew that eventually they would have to return to their secretive lives, biding their time until they were able to be together again. She stifled a sigh, responding to him instead.
"Me? Wonderful?" She laughed softly, tilting her head upwards so that she could gaze at him with dark eyes, her feeling for him clear in her stare. "I think you're the wonderful one. I'm still trying to figure out how I got so lucky."

I used up all of my tricks
"I'll admit, I've grown a bit attached to them. I'm enjoying watching them grow up. I've found that I love pups. They're just so...unique. Special."
Had her head not been under his she would have seen again that small smile, his eyes roaming past the stream to some unknown land only for his eyes to see. “I can’t say I care much for pups of other wolves. However, these are to be the packs future, thus they are special and I let them amuse me, and I will protect them. However, someday we will have pups, and anything you help me create I know I will love.” There was that word again, love. Not a word he ever planned to use, and yet now when he was around Matrid it was becoming far more common than expected. Not necessarily a bad thing. “They will grow up strong, smart, with independent personalities.” A smirk, “though they will mind us until old enough to care for themselves. All of them will deserve the rank of alpha, it will be up to them if they choose to chase after that goal.” To have multiple pups…only one would be able to replace him as alpha when he got older. Kyren certainly did not want his pups to go through the same life experiences that he and his brother lived.
I hope that you like this, but you probably won't
A sigh at the thought of his brother had Kyren move his head from her, shifting his gaze farther abroad and then up to the sky itself. The hatred for his brother that still swam in his gut that for a moment he felt an urge to show his fangs at the memory, and he certainly didn’t want to look at Matrid as the anger rolled about in him. His brother who had made the terms of the challenge include loser being a sklavin, the brother who had cost him his eyesight, and who know had the title of alpha Kyren had wanted for himself. Shaking his head he turned his gaze back to Matrid, “Sorry.” A deeper sigh, “I wish the pups would grow up faster, that the wheel of time might spin quicker. There is no way I can leave this back until the numbers are larger, the pack stronger and able to stand against any intruders. Only then can we finally leave and I find my own land to claim. Then we will have our pups, and no one will tell us what to do.” A part of him deeply wanted to challenge his brother again for that very pack, to gain his revenge, and yet deep down he knew it would be smarter to find his own land, or at least one with a weaker pack.
you think you're cooler than me
"I think you're the wonderful one. I'm still trying to figure out how I got so lucky."
“For whatever rearson, you hid your true self. No one was able to see the real you. Like looking at the rocks in the stream, all you see is the algae growing on top of most of them. If you turn those rocks over, some are smooth and shiny underneath, far prettier than what was obvious to the eye. I was fortunate enough to see the real you. I imagine we should be glad you didn’t get to know yourself till we met.” Since when did I become a poet? Or…whatever you call making up silly comparisons such as that. What the heck? Algae and smooth rocks? Whatever, can’t take back the comment now. Where had it come from in the first place?

Matrid * "However, someday we will have pups, and anything you help me create I know I will love.”
The words had Matrid's grin growing wider, if possible. She felt giddy, as if she herself was a pup. For perhaps the millionth time, she wondered if she would be a good mother. When Kyren went on to describe how the pups would act, she knew that she would love them very much. Already she loved the idea of them, and silently she reassured herself that not only would she be a good mother, but that Kyren would be a fantastic father. It was a daydream that pleased her, and she knew that when the day actually came for her and Kyren to truly start their life together, she would be ready.
When he sighed and moved away, she was confused, but she knew not to take it personally. She patiently waited for him to say something else, and he did, telling her how he wished time would pass more swiftly. She nodded, partially agreeing and partially caught up. She found herself becoming loyal to Kasimira, but at the same time, she knew that she would leave with Kyren in a heartbeat. It made her feel almost guilty, and her conflicking emotions caused her to frown as she took a few steps towards the stream.
I imagine we should be glad you didn’t get to know yourself till we met.”
As he said this, she stared hard into the stream until she found one of the rocks Kyren spoke of: covered in algae, looking very unattractive and not very special at all. Matrid didn't wade into the water to turn it over, but she liked to imagine that if she had, it would have been beautiful underneath. She smiled as she glanced back towards Kyren, tail swaying just slightly. "I'm glad that you were the one to see the real me. Sometimes I wonder if you're the only one who can."
Then, she allowed her ears to flatten against her skull as she thought. Her father certaintly hadn't seen the use in Matrid, and that made her think harder. "When we do have pups, I want them to always know that they're loved. I know they will be. I'll love them very much. But I don't ever want them to think that there's a chance that we don't love them. It's one of the worst feelings in the world."
She laughed nervously, as if trying to cheer herself up by making light of the situation. All the while she stared into the stream, watching her faint, rippling reflection instead of the rocks.

"I'm glad that you were the one to see the real me. Sometimes I wonder if you're the only one who can."
Kyren’s tail twitched behind him, wagging back and forth as he enjoyed time with his mate. “If no one else can see it, that would prove how many in this world are blind fools. I will not say I was ever dumb, but until I lost sight in one eye, I was surely more blind than I am even now. Only those who are not so absorbed in themselves could possibly miss seeing the real you, at least so long as you show your true self.”
I hope that you like this, but you probably won't
As her ears flattened to some unwanted inner thought of her own, he nudged her head up lightly with the tip of his muzzle offering encouragement for whatever was bothering her.
"When we do have pups, I want them to always know that they're loved. I know they will be. I'll love them very much. But I don't ever want them to think that there's a chance that we don't love them. It's one of the worst feelings in the world."
you think you're cooler than me
“They will know. We will encourage them, build up their confidence and sense of security. They will both trust themselves and in their parents.” His voice hardened with the seriousness of his next thoughts, “no pup of ours will ever end up at auktion rock, at least not as a sklavin.” Call it pride for a pup that had not yet been born, love, or just pride in his own name and bloodline, whatever one called it he sounded quite determined that he would risk his neck on keeping them from being sklavins. “I did not know love growing up, it was not a thing my father ever deemed important to teach me, and actually he considered it a weakness. However, you have taught it to me and together we will teach it to them.

Matrid * “They will know. We will encourage them, build up their confidence and sense of security. They will both trust themselves and in their parents. No pup of ours will ever end up at auktion rock, at least not as a sklavin.”
His words comforted Matrid, and she found herself relaxing, allowing herself to lean against him again. Already she was worrying about their future children, wondering if they would grow up to be strong Dominors or brave Freiors. She could only hope that none of them were confined to the life of Sklavin, just as their mother was. But no...you won't be a Sklavin when they're born. You'd never allow them to be born into this life.
Matrid remained silent for a while, simply enjoying being with Kyren. The sun was high above them but there was a pleasant breeze. Matrid closed her eyes once more, wishing again and again that things were simple. Maybe one day they would be, if she just continued to have hope. Maybe one day Kyren really would free her, and then they would be able to be together. Or perhaps sooner, depending on how Tortuga took the news once Kyren delivered it..
“I did not know love growing up, it was not a thing my father ever deemed important to teach me, and actually he considered it a weakness. However, you have taught it to me and together we will teach it to them."
She glanced up at him, automatically nuzzling closer. "I was never really shown it, either. By my mother sometimes, but it was rare. Certainly not by my first Dominor..." She paused, shuddering and moving even closer to him as she recalled her time spent with Nim. It made her feel extremely greatful that she had been taken in by Kasimira, who so far had not shown any sign of aggression towards Matrid. And she was also glad that she now had Kyren, because he made her feel...safe.
Matrid stepped away from Kyren, lowering herself onto her haunches and then sliding down into a laying position, her belly brushing against the grass. She gestured with her muzzle to the place beside her, silently asking him to lay with her. As she did so, she allowed her mind to wander, and she realized something. Quickly she glanced up at Kyren, shifting slightly.
"I do love you, you know," she said in a small voice as she looked up at him nervously, for although she had implied it, she realized she had never directly said it to him. "I didn't think it was possible for me to love anyone after the things I went through, but I was very wrong."

"I was never really shown it, either. By my mother sometimes, but it was rare. Certainly not by my first Dominor..."
Kyren returned her nuzzle, his eyes sliding close as the wheels in his mind turned over her words and his own past. Neither had really known love, and yet here they were. Father and brother had both believed such a thing nothing more than an emotion that would stop you from living up to your full potential, a hindrance. Kyren had believed that also, until he met Matrid. Could he look at the logic of love now? Look past the joy and peace and see reasons it was dangerous? Well, this wasn’t the smartest of relationships, loving a sklavin when he was a beta. Even if the alpha’s accepted this, it still might cause problems with how other wolves saw such a thing. Would they think less of him? Would they think Matrid was improperly looking above her station? If Matrid was in danger Kyren would have to protect her, regardless of the odds. Yes, love was a weakness with many faults. However, what father had not bothered telling him was that it was worth all the flaws. Kyren’s tail swayed ever so slightly, hardly more than a leaf rustled by some wind, as he found an answer to his own question.
I hope that you like this, but you probably won't
His eyes followed Matrid as she moved to lie down, his expression on his face didn’t change to much and yet one might swear that his eyes sparkled with a bit of merriment perhaps? As she silently invited him over, he stepped out, walking slowly and just enjoying the feelings of the moment. Lying down beside her, he gave a sigh breathing out some more inner concerns that would have seemed far more important only minutes before. Kyren started to lie his head down but then jerked it up as Matrid’s head raised to meet his own.
"I do love you, you know, I didn't think it was possible for me to love anyone after the things I went through, but I was very wrong."
you think you're cooler than me
“Matrid, I love you.” His words were soft and with a serioius intensity, making sure she knew these were not polite words, just an offered response to her own. “I swore I would never look into such weak emotions as love and caring. I centered the world around how I wanted it to play out, how to sculpt everything and everyone to my delight and power. I have met you, and now will gladly take all the risks that come with love. You are worth far more than….” His voice stilled for a moment as he considered if he would truly say such a thing, “you are more important to me than the power, or rulership of a pack,” a sly grin grew on his face as he said that line, “oh, but I still will rule, and you beside me. That’s just destiny, and I gladly follow that tune as well. However, I do love you Matrid, and everything about you. I will make sure you get the life you deserve, and will work to make sure everyone see’s you for the wonderfull wolf you are. Time will reveal all. Until they learn, know that I love you.”

Matrid * Kyren's words both shocked and pleased Matrid, causing her ears to twitch and flicker as she eagerly listened to the things that he muttered to her. For the longest time, Matrid could remember yearning for someone to love her like her mother had once fortold. Eventually Matrid had come to the conclusion that her mother was wrong, and that no one would ever love her. It was a terrible, hopeless feeling, and now that Matrid had finally experienced the powerful emotion, she never wanted to go without feeling it again.
You are worth far more than....you are more important to me than the power, or rulership of a pack,”
These words caused Matrid to inhale sharply, a small little gasp able to be heard. She knew how much rulership of a pack meant to Kyren, and for him to claim that she was more important truly surprised the Sklavin. For a long moment she was silent, simply listening as he continued to speak, making it quite clear that he truly did want her. Then, suddenly, Matrid was tearing up. Blinking hard to keep the tears at bay, she twisted and rested her head on Kyren's back, forcing herself to take deep, calming breaths.
"I'm just so happy," she said finally, once she had managed to get herself under control. "I thought I didn't deserve love. And then all of a sudden, out of no where, you come along and we fall for each other and it's almost as close to perfect as it can get. Maybe when I am at your side while you rule, or when I'm raising your pups, it will be perfect. Until then, I have no problem waiting. You're worth it."
Her thoughts took on a different turn then and she struggled to put them into words, wanting to make sure that he understood. "I know it may seem like I've become very fond of Lady Kasimira lately, and I have. She's a much better Dominor than I expected to find myself with, and I suppose you could say that I'm almost loyal to her." She frowned, shaking her head as if that wasn't right. "I'm not entirely sure. But know that no matter what I say or do, or how I act around her, I would leave with you in a heartbeat. And that I'm always on your side, and always keeping an eye on things for you."
She nuzzled closer to him, falling silent. Once again she found herself wishing that either time would stop, or that somehow she and Kyren would be allowed to act so fondly regularly. She knew that there was not a very good chance of either happening, however, so she kept these thoughts to herself. Instead she focused on his scent and the way his fur felt beneath her muzzle. She knew that if anyone were to stumble upon them, it would be bad. But she hoped that the others would assume that Matrid was close and Kyren was busy with something. She simply couldn't bring herself to get up and move away from Kyren.

I used up all of my tricks
"I thought I didn't deserve love.”
Kyren snorted at the comment and with a gentle nudge moved his head away for a moment to stare at her, letting her finish her statement before making his opinion known. “The wolves you knew before were fools, while I never met those you grew up with I imagine you were the most worthy wolf there. There is strength in you that has hid, and yet the lowly position of sklavin, the treatment you’ve been given, and any other cruel joke of life has been unable to break that strength. You are strong Matrid, in a way that no fool that only knows how to fight could ever understand.” His serious look turned somewhat playful, a wicked smile on that face and a sparkle in his eye, “it will be perfect then, no matter what difficulties, when we rule and have our own pups any strife we have will only offer us more chance to prove what we can do together, and how strong we can make a great pack.”
I hope that you like this, but you probably won't
"I know it may seem like I've become very fond of Lady Kasimira lately, and I have. She's a much better Dominor than I expected to find myself with, and I suppose you could say that I'm almost loyal to her." "I'm not entirely sure. But know that no matter what I say or do, or how I act around her, I would leave with you in a heartbeat. And that I'm always on your side, and always keeping an eye on things for you."
He could well imagine the confusion in her mind as to how her loyalties should lie. A rock hard knowledge of what was most important, them, and yet at the same time feeling another loyalty that had its own direction for her to follow. The lady has been fair to them, not using her power to be abusive or overly condescending. Tortuga was likewise a good male, a sturdy alpha who’s calm air was likely to help more nervous wolves feel calmer by his solid presence. “I understand Matrid. It was not lightly that I told the Lady back when I first met her that she had my loyalty. Nor was it a lie, as confusing a thought as it might seem when I intend to have my own pack. I have no intention to ever ask you to harm this back, it would be rather counterproductive. It is my belief a time will come when we will be permitted to leave. However, first this pack must be strong, or else we are no better than cowardly sklavin that run from their problems.”
you think you're cooler than me
When she moved to nuzzle him Kyren instantly replied in kind, then with a sight shook out his coat. “Enough of this. Let us try one more time to be rid of secrets. I will go find Tortuga and see if perhaps now he has time to speak with me. I am tired of having to consider how much time we have spent alone not wanting any to note the two of us being gone long at the same time. If I find him and all goes well, I might be calling you shortly.” A slight pause as his brow furrowed a bit, “of course if it doesn’t go well I might have to call you as well.” What would happen if he said no to accepting them as mates? Not a pleasant thought. The answer was there of course, he would defy them but it was not a thing he wished to do. A heavy weight was in his chest as he wondered if he could lie and say that he would give up his feelings for Matrid, that he would treat her as any other sklavin. Most likely he would refuse to change his mind and accept the punishment. It would be fine, the goddess herself had suggested this.
Kyren nuzzled Matrid one more time, inhaled her scent deeply before turning and heading back in the direction of the den, he would be sure to scent or find trail of Tortuga was when he got closer.
